Thekkady

Spice Village

Spice Village is the essence of a mountain tribal village, re-imagined for the modern independent traveller. A tribute to ancient ways of life. And to one man's patience and passion.

Curling around a misty ridge 2,000ft high in the Periyar vastness, we found a ranger's home, with fruit trees, rare herbs and a profusion of flowering plants. And here, we set out to build a resort. A village, produced whole, using mountain spirit and tribal wisdoms as building material. Of course, the comforts of a modern hotel exist, but they never intrude. Modern plumbing, comfortable beds and hot showers find their place, but in a setting stripped down to its natural essence.

Elephant Court

The Elephant Court is an understated, elegant hospitality experience, both, for business and recreation. A pair of impassive, miniature elephants watch, as demure sari clad hostesses greet guests with jasmine garlands.

The hotel is situated on four acres, over a landscaped hillock. The architecture establishes the cultural identity of the property and is a marriage of traditional design and responses to contemporary demands. It explores the relationship between the environment and individuals. The extensive use of teak all around keeps the spaces cool and one’s senses are calmed by the connection with nature that wood provides. Subtle definitions of space provide a serene, yet dynamic environment.

Green Woods

Amidst 5.5 sprawling acres of verdant woodland, spiced mist and winding paths, you'll find unparalleled hospitality and comfort. 26 well-appointed cottages come with all the facilities, complete with birdsong and perfect sunrises, to restore in you that long-lost equanimity within yourself. Thekkady is filled with romance and magic. Add our cozy and tucked away honeymoon cottages to the picture and you have the perfect setting for an intimate getaway.

Cardamom County

We are a nature retreat bordered on one side by the Periyar National Park and Tiger Reserve and its lush highland forest and wetlands ecosystem. On the other side we are bordered by a vibrant spice-trading community typical of the hill stations above the Malabar coast. Walking distance from both the entry to the Periyar and our village neighbors, we also welcome you to simply relax at the resort.

We have three categories among our 44 rooms, all of which are outfitted to prepare you for the next day—whether that will be an active day trekking in the Periyar Reserve, a relaxing day at Ayura, or a culture-spanning day negotiating a spice purchase. The best preparation is comfort. Our guests have been telling us for years that there must be something in the mountain air here that gives them such deep sleep and sweet dreams. We believe that state-of-the-art bedding helps too, but we never dispute the value of fresh mountain air. The hot showers are one of the luxuries nature provides, due to our location in the heart of one of the most important watersheds in India—we harvest and store that water, heating it with renewable energy sources including solar for the majority of rooms.

Brunton Boatyard

Moored on a historic stretch of Cochin's famed harbour, the Brunton Boatyard Hotel is our tribute to another age. Resurrected from the remains of a Victorian shipbuilding yard, it gives the modern traveller a unique opportunity to dwell amidst the shadow-plays of 19th century history.

The recreated period building blends in perfectly with its colonial era surroundings: once-great trading houses from the high era of commerce, when the pepper of Kerala was as precious as gold. Like the cultures they celebrate, the hotel's interiors too, are an eclectic blend of English, Portuguese and Dutch influences.Soaring ceilings, hanging fans, and everywhere, artefacts and curios from the great age of steam and sail.

Like everything else, the cuisine too is a melting pot of cultures. The Portuguese came to trade in spice, but left behind the 'Indian' red chili. The Syrian Christians cooked up a variety of Pork dishes that co-incidentally, tasted fabulous with the local string hoppers. The Jews found coriander both Kosher and delicious, so into the cook pot it went. And Dutch puddings were found to benefit greatly from a smidgen of fresh cinnamon.

Malabar House

The Malabar House is in the heart of historical Fort Cochin, opposite St. Francis Church and 3 minutes walk to the Chinese fishing nets. It is ideally located for sightseeing, shopping and backwater cruises. Jew town with its vast curio and antique market is 3 km away; the Vembanad lake just an hours drive. The distance to Cochin Airport is 45 km, transit time 1 hour.

The Malabar House is not just another Cochin hotel, it is a documented part of Fort Cochin's & Kerala's historical fabric. Its history dates back to 1755, when Jan Herman Clausing, a Dutch, bought the property from Mathew Henrich Beyls. Subsequently owned by spice traders, tea traders & bankers, in 1996 it became Fort Cochin's first boutique heritage hotel.

Designed to the last detail and furnished with select antiques and art,The Malabar House seamlessly combines tradition & contemporary design. The feel is small, cozy & personal, a heaven amidst this vibrant yet historical harbour city.

The Malabar House has 17 unique rooms and suites.

Old Harbour

Later it remained a residential home to employees of English tea-broking firms until it was left unused for a period of time.

Kalari Kovilakom

Kalari Kovilakom is the Palace for Ayurveda, perhaps the first and only one of its kind. Its face is the face of the warrior-king, elegant and expansive. But its heart is that of a sage, offering a deep healing, a doorway to the union of the mind, body and spirit.

If the old legends are to be believed, healing is part of Kalari's very soul. Stories are told of a Prince who came to the foothills of Kerala's Annamalai Hills around the 10th century. It seems he was afflicted with a particularly troublesome skin ailment. So he came to cure himself in the healing spring waters of this land. Possibly, he also sought the medicinal Venga tree that grew here in profusion.

Dharmavarman stayed on to found a kingdom, Vengunad, 'The Land of the Venga Tree'. And for all the days to come, his descendants held sway over these silent and green foothills. It was in the 19th century that they built Kalari Kovilakom.
