Brihadeeswara Temple, also known as the Big Temple, is a magnificent UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. Built in the 11th century by the great Chola ruler Raja Raja Chola I, the temple stands as a masterpiece of Dravidian architecture and a symbol of the Chola dynasty’s artistic and engineering brilliance.

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple is renowned for its massive vimana (tower) rising over 66 meters, one of the tallest temple towers in the world. The temple complex houses an enormous Shiva Lingam and an equally impressive monolithic Nandi statue, carved from a single stone. Intricate carvings, murals, and inscriptions across the temple walls narrate stories of devotion, administration, and cultural life during the Chola period.

Beyond its architectural grandeur, Brihadeeswara Temple remains an active place of worship and spiritual significance. Visitors experience a powerful blend of history, devotion, and artistry, making it one of the most important and awe-inspiring temples in India.
