Vembanad Lake is the longest lake in India and the largest in Kerala, stretching across several districts including Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Ernakulam. It forms the heart of Kerala’s famous backwater system and is a major attraction for houseboat cruises and scenic village life experiences.

The lake is closely associated with Kumarakom and Alappuzha, where visitors can enjoy traditional houseboat stays, canoe rides, and breathtaking sunsets over calm waters. The surrounding areas are rich in biodiversity and are home to the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary.

Vembanad is also known for the unique “below sea level” farming practices in Kuttanad. The tranquil waters, coconut-lined shores, and slow-paced backwater lifestyle make it one of Kerala’s most iconic natural destinations.
