Sabarimala is one of the most sacred pilgrimage centers in India, dedicated to Lord Ayyappa. Located deep inside the Periyar Tiger Reserve in the Western Ghats, the temple attracts millions of devotees every year.
The pilgrimage is unique because devotees observe a 41-day vratham (austerity period) before visiting. Pilgrims traditionally wear black or blue attire and carry the sacred Irumudi Kettu while trekking through forest paths to reach the temple.
One of the most significant rituals is climbing the 18 sacred steps (Pathinettam Padi) to enter the sanctum. The annual Mandala-Makaravilakku season (November–January) is the most important and crowded pilgrimage period.
Sabarimala is not just a temple visit but a spiritual journey symbolizing discipline, devotion, and equality.
