The Champakkulam Moolam Boat Race is one of the oldest and most traditional snake boat races in Kerala. It is held on the Pamba River at Champakulam in Alappuzha district.

This historic race marks the beginning of Kerala’s annual Vallamkali (boat race) season. The event is linked to the installation of the idol at the Ambalappuzha Sree Krishna Temple, and it takes place on the Moolam day in the Malayalam month of Mithunam (June–July).

Magnificent Chundan Vallams (snake boats) participate in the race, along with other traditional boat categories. The rhythmic rowing, traditional Vanchipattu songs, and festive crowd create an electrifying cultural atmosphere.

Unlike some highly commercialized races, Champakkulam retains a strong traditional and devotional essence, making it a must-experience cultural event in Kerala.
