Edakkal Caves, located in the scenic Wayanad district near Sulthan Bathery, are among the most fascinating prehistoric sites in India. Unlike typical caves, Edakkal is actually a natural rock shelter formed by a massive boulder wedged between two rocks, creating a unique cave-like structure.
The caves are famous for their ancient petroglyphs (rock carvings), believed to date back thousands of years. These carvings depict human figures, animals, symbols, and inscriptions that offer valuable insights into early human civilization and prehistoric life.
Perched at an altitude of about 1,200 meters on the Ambukuthi Hills, reaching the caves involves a moderate trek, making the journey as exciting as the destination itself.
