Pancha Rathas, also known as the Five Rathas, is one of the most remarkable monuments in Mamallapuram (Mahabalipuram), Tamil Nadu. Carved entirely from single granite rocks during the Pallava dynasty in the 7th century, this UNESCO World Heritage Site showcases the early development of Dravidian temple architecture. Each structure is uniquely designed and represents a different architectural style.
The five monuments are named after the Pandava brothers and Draupadi from the Mahabharata—Dharmaraja Ratha, Bhima Ratha, Arjuna Ratha, Nakula-Sahadeva Ratha, and Draupadi Ratha. Though named after mythological characters, the structures were never used for worship. Instead, they served as architectural models that later inspired South Indian temple construction.
Surrounded by open landscapes and detailed stone carvings of gods, animals, and mythological scenes, Pancha Rathas is a must-visit for history enthusiasts, architecture lovers, and cultural explorers. The site offers a fascinating glimpse into ancient craftsmanship and the artistic vision of the Pallavas.
