Popularly known as Champakulam Church, St. Mary’s Forane Church is one of the oldest Christian churches in India. Located near the serene backwaters of Alappuzha, this historic church is believed to have been established in AD 427.
The church is also called Kalloorkadu Church and is closely associated with the ancient Christian heritage of Kerala. According to tradition, the church received a statue of Mother Mary from the St. Thomas Christian community.
The architecture reflects a blend of traditional Kerala style and European influence. The annual feast (Perunnal) celebrated in October attracts thousands of devotees and is marked by colorful processions and festivities.
The peaceful riverside setting makes it both a spiritual and scenic destination.
